Founded in 1990, Dance Shop at The Nutmeg has been the premiere dance shop in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut.
Ezabeth Tacas, a dancer mother and Nutmeg Volunteer, founded the original shop in a small storefront next to The Nutmeg Conservatory on Water Street in downtown Torrington. Mrs. Tacas ran the store with featured items for Nutmeg's students; such as leotards, tights, and ballet shoes. As the store became known and gained local popularity, merchandise included tap, jazz and hip hop shoes and attire. In 2001, the dance shop moved to 62 Main Street to continue its alliance with The Nutmeg Conservatory. The shop moved into a storefront that was originally a jewelry store, Louis Tunick Company, founded in 1900. In restoring the storefront, The Dance Shop kept some of the original cases from the jewelry store and matched its new cases to the original.
